Austin quartet's debut only hints at the type of beautiful insanity the band's
capable of raising live, as it did last month at South by Southwest. Still, you'll get the idea. Combining the gentle guitar textures of Sonic Youth with the rapid-fire rhythmics of Unwound or GodheadSilo, Trail of the Dead balances its sound between fury and elegance -- the group can be as reckless and savage as a school bully, or it can be meticulously careful, handling each note as if it were a piece of broken glass.
