AYWKUBTTOD (Aaaargh! Someone call the abbreviation police!) are a far more exciting proposition. Drowning the stage in feedback, air punching and hyperactivity, the Texan five-piece are primed to take the award for most impressively maturing US alt guitar rawk. They’ve been knocking around a bit, but a major label deal seems to have given them the lift they need to take them on to the next level. The new album is beautifully crafted and relies more on attacking the emotions than bludgeoning the ears.

I’m here for …Trial of Dead, obviously, Madonna being one of my favourite records of the last few years. This is one of the annual awards shows set up by the cruel, Ming the Merciless-like dictator of our nation’s youth, the once quite good, now decadent and hateful NME. They claim these shows exist to “highlight exciting new musical talent” or some such, but really they’re the result of the slightly less dignified process of grabbing all the bands they can afford to pay and sticking them together, four a night, in a vague kind of order.

... Trail Of Dead arrive with a reputation for squeezing the last drops from their live shows, usually in a hail of broken instruments and often spilt blood. Tonight Matthew, we will not be disappointed. For the uninitiated, the Austin outfit have made the US-punk-rock-outsider persona their own. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club are mere pretenders by comparison to a band with so many battle scars.
