Tonight was special no question. To see a band flying at their absolute peak in the close confines of a tiny venue is a truly thrilling experience. ToD have been around a while now and have always threatened to cross over and reach a more mainstream audience. Indeed they probably could have done so but for the fact they instill their music with a healthy dose of Sonic Youth style weirdness, which counters the melodic aspects perfectly. Here is a band who create brilliant alternative rock infused with punk venom and epic grandeur, and who just rock like fuck in the live setting. They are quickly gaining legendary status in indie-rock circles and look likely to be one of THE bands to watch in 2005 following the release of their "Worlds Apart" album in January. They lift much of the set from their previous full lengths, "Madonna" and "Source Tags and Codes" and tonight are spectacular. This isn't an ordinary band, they have two drummers (seeing them crammed on the tiny Tuts stage raises a smile) and swap instruments and vocal duties throughout the set. The show has two themes- inspirational alt-rock (sung by Conrad Keely), and mental as fuck punk mayhem (with Jason Reece on vocals). Among Keely's highlights are "Mistakes and Regrets", the beautiful "It Was There That I Saw You" and "Another Morning Stoner"- all of which stand up as modern punk rock classics. Reece screams his way through the awesome "Caterwaul" and "Homage" seeming to destroy anything in his path. He crowd surfs, baits the crowd and throws pieces of equipment around the stage. Keely's is a more measured performance but is still amazing to behold. Towards the show's end Conrad comments on the jetlag the band are suffering but there is no evidence of it in their frantic performance. By the end of the show I felt like I'd witnessed something and not just watched some band play a show. TOD could be the next truly important (whatever that means) alt-rock crossover, they have the tunes, the stage show and a true passion for their art. Do the right thing and lend them your ear. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
