Danny Wood to Play Danny Wood in New Kids Retrospective 06/05/2006 -- by merlin
LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) -- Strikingly tall Trail of Dead bassist Danny Wood has been tapped by Lifetime Television Networks to play Danny Wood in an upcoming TV-movie based on the trials and tribulations of troubled teen-pop sensation New Kids on the Block.
The movie, set during a two decade span of the 80s and 90s, will tell the true story of the boy band's meteoric rise to fame, its time spent in the spotlight, their own catastrophic self-annihilation, and the resulting aftermath of depression, sex, and drugs. A Lifetime spokeswoman explained their reasoning behind doing the retrospective: "We've always been interested in doing a New Kids on the Block project, but we were never given the funds. As soon as we secured an increased budget, we knew this is what we had to do. It's for the good of society to finally put an end to speculation and explain exactly how everything happened. We [at Lifetime] are pouring millions into this, most of our budget actually, and there's no doubt in our mind that it's going to cause quite a stir with fans and the media. It'll be a hit."
Danny Wood (the elder) said he was very excited to have Danny Wood (the younger) playing him in the movie and was looking forward to their first encounter. Danny (younger) echoed Wood's (elder's) sentiments. "I'm extremely excited. I can't wait to start shooting. I know for a fact that doing this movie will change my life. I grew up listening to New Kids on the Block, so I'm loving every minute of this." Wood (young) also gave solace to fans worried that the movie might affect his ability to tour with Trail of Dead. "A lot of the footage is going to be taped while I'm on tour with Trail. I'll have to dress a bit colorful for a while, but it will totally be worth it in the end.
When asked about the rather large height differential between himself and the original New Kid, Wood responded smoothly: "It's not a problem. Television takes away about a foot and a half so we should be okay."
