Jason Reece Reflects on Recent Epochal European Tour 09/24/2007 -- by merlin
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- Eccentric ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead multi-tasking bit part-frontman Jason Reece took time out of his busy schedule recently to give select reporters and insight into his band's recent run of dates in Europe.
"It was eye-opening, that's for sure," said a candid Reece of the 25-date tour. "We met a lot of people we hadn't met before and experienced a lot of things we'd never experienced before." Reece elaborated by explaining that despite a shaky start to the tour, he feels the band bonded and improved gradually during every show. "With Danny [Wood] and Doni [Schroader] not there it was difficult to adjust to everything at first. The group decided as a whole to play more of Conrad's songs this tour because we had gone back to the two drummer setup for our first show in New York. I was relegated back to drumming duties for the most part. The opening few shows I had trouble sitting in one place for the whole hour, so Conrad went over to keyboards and I started playing guitar on songs I had never played guitar before. Now I can see why he hates playing drums so much. What a waste of perfectly good charisma."
Speaking of the bands somewhat unexpected popularity surge in Germany, Reece remained enthusiastic. "The reception we received in Germany was fantastic. We haven't experienced anything remotely like that anywhere in the world in years. Every club show [we played] was packed, completely sold out, and every festival we played we drew massive crowds and had amazing support. I even think 'Worlds Apart' went gold there recently or something crazy. Who would have thought that opening for [a band like] Audioslave could open so many doors."
When asked whether or not Trail of Dead would continue to prefer tours in Europe over tours in the United States, Reece was openly forthright. "I don't see why not. Wouldn't you? I'm married now so I have to take advantage of exciting opportunities while I still can."
